The Kid from Snowy River

Wazza's poem "Mad Mick from Cabramatta" reminded me of this folly I wrote a few years ago!

The kid from Snowy River

There was movement at the kindy for the word was passed around
that the mouse from Tommy’s bag had got away,
and had joined the local vermin, it weighed in at half a pound
so all the children gathered, stopping play.

There was Harrison who had his pile of pebbles in a cup
and Sammy with his hair as white as snow,
they thought of throwing pebbles when the rodent’s heads popped up,
they needed a strong arm but where to go?

So Nancy of the overthrow came down to lend a hand,
no better kid at chucking rocks then reigned,
for no-one could out-throw her while on little feet she’d stand,
she learnt to throw while being potty-trained.

And one there brought his cat along, a small and weedy beast
was something like a panther undersized
with a touch of common ally cat, in great need of a feast
such a mousey meal to him was surely prized

His owner slight and needy, no power in his charge to “stay!”
and Sandy said “that cat will never do,
for he’ll prance and leap and gallop and he’ll scare the mice away,
the playground’s far too rough for such as you.”

So he waited sad and spiteful only Nancy stood his friend
“my bruvver said that he could come”, she said:
“I promise he’ll be with us when our lunch is at an end
and we’ve licked all peanut butter off the bread.”

So they went and found the meeces by the Jacaranda stump
they paused and wiped the sweat from off their brow,
then Sammy gave the order “when I count to three boys jump,
no use for sneaking up upon them now.”

“And Nancy you must hit them when they run off to the right
be careful and don’t let the pebbles spill,
for never was a thrower who could hit them try as might,
once they gain the shelter of the drain pipe grill.”

So Nancy flexed to hit them - she was standing on the swing
where the best and finely balanced take their place,
the cat then raced on past her as she raised her arm to fling
and sadly she fell down upon her face.

But thankfully she landed where the grass was freshly mown
as the lucky mice slipped through a tiny crack,
so they halted cowed and beaten, then their parents took them home
and only Tommy dared a last look back.

At Snowy River Kindy where the nappies swing and sway
as the breezes past the clothes line gently glide,
the kid from Snowy River has a different pet today
and at lunch time all are told to stay inside.
