Nightwatch

Post by mummsie » Tue Apr 19, 2016 10:54 am

I've always had a fascination with owls...

NIGHTWATCH

(c)]Sue Pearce 2016

As winter stakes its lengthy hold
the evenings shadows manifold
beyond the grove, as creatures, bold,
stand sentry for the night.

Where high above on branches, bare
the marble eyes of wisdom stare,
their focus, coldly unaware
of their impending plight.

With cambered wings and talons spread,
a silent soar, a flash of red,
and once again the perfect thread,
its victim, deadly quiet.

As winter stakes its deathly hold
another night is set to fold
beyond the grove, as creatures mould
and disappear from sight.

the door is always open, the kettles always on, my shoulders here to cry on, i'll not judge who's right or wrong.

I've got a pair of mopokes in my backyard Sue.

A haunting call.

Thank you Heather and Bob and happy to assist with a smile any day Heather.
Bob, you are indeed fortunate to share your backyard with these hunters of the night. I love Owls, next to Wedged-tailed eagles they are my favorite bird. We often hear them in the surrounds here but never as close as when we lived at the caravan park. They were regulars of a night there, cleaning up moths drawn to the streetlights. Their call is haunting but carries with it a sense of mystique.

Cheers
Sue

Stirring and beautiful Sue - love this! Owls are so lovely, and this paints such a clear picture that I'm right there with you watching.

Got to agree Sue ... that truly is a beautiful poem. Your first verse grabbed me immediately and the rest ... picture perfect.
