HOT TO TROT ... Maureen Clifford © The #ScribblyBark Poet

She bought the Firie's calendar and had done so for years.
The sight of all those abs and pecs just moved a girl to tears.
She rather fancied big red trucks – thought they were meals on wheels
and sucker for a uniform she thought these blokes real deals.

Of all the pictures Mr May she thought the very best
as nonchalant he leaned against the truck - his hairy chest
and muscled arms displayed the coloured tattoos on his skin.
Turning stop cocks and safety valves would never trouble to him.

She read the safety hints displayed on every single page
and took note of them, actioned them, her conscience to assuage.
For others scoffed at her outlay each year for paper dates
but she knew she was ready for hot stuff thanks to her Mates.

At the first sign of Dragons Blood approaching ‘cross the plain
her plan of action sprang to life – her work was not in vain.
She’d ringed the house and soaked the ground with fire retardant foam
and raked and cleaned up all the leaves once scattered round her home.

She’d had the tall trees lopped last year, and bought a water pump
to force a stream of water from the thousand gallon sump.
Old hessian sacks for beaters were kept beside each door
and buckets full of water waited ready on the floor.

And as she stood prepared to fight – she’d kept her powder dry
and her lipstick at the ready just in case the blokes came by
which they did – in yellow fluoro jackets in their big red truck
and put the hot stuff out and left. A girl can’t help bad luck.
