SHUT THE GATE
Guess I'd best be turning in now,
done 'bout all that one man can.
Built my bridges, then I burnt them
Lit the fire, then I ran.
Sailed the seas, all seven of them,
had a girl in every port.
Broke some hearts, and had mine broken.
Broke the law but never caught.
Went to places that I oughtn't,
fed upon forbidden fruit.
Danced on beaches in the moonlight
decked out in my birthday suit.
Dug my heels in when it mattered,
stood my ground and did not budge.
Poured my heart out on these pages
for the world to read and judge.
Now i read obituaries,
checking that my name's not there.
Sometimes thinking should I find it
would it matter? Would I care?
Life's been good, but as i slow down
I prize each and every day
Shut the gate, the horse has bolted
The years have up and got away.
