I seem to have a fascination with graves at the moment




Shadows On The Stairs

There’s only memories my darling and a statue made of stone,
reminding me of days long gone and happiness once known.
White lilies grace your resting place out where the river skirts the track;
a red glass bowl has flowers from your garden out the back.
I fight back tears each visit still; for I can’t leave the past behind,
the pain of loss still haunts me and you’re always on my mind

The old homesteads so lonely now without your happy smiling face,
the gold brocade you loved no longer brightens up the place.
Your silver locket’s shining there; still on the dresser near our bed,
exactly where you placed it on the day that we were wed.
I sense your gentle spirit here adjusting pictures and the chairs,
and I could swear at times I see your shadow on the stairs.

Bit uncanny seeing your name on a grave even if it is your great great grandfather. Well kept as you can see but it is on private property
and access is pretty hard.

It reminds me of a grave side service I went to years ago.
As the service ended I turned around to leave and there was a grave with my exact name on it.

Nice poem Terry - beautifully simple and poignant. Your last line is quite similar to my own in one way so we must have been on the 'same page' there! This set of prompts certainly appears to be bringing up the subject of loss. I agree that graves are so fascinating, but oh dear, seeing your own name on one must indeed be pretty spooky!

Yes turning around after the service and there at my feet a grave with my exact name on it - left me hoping I wasn't seeing it from the after-life and looking at my own grave.

There never are any words that really cover the loss but time softens the edges and the poet finds a way.

PS. Did any one else notice the spooky resemblance of Bob's grandfathers headstone and Bob's head jammed into his hat? Perhaps it's just me.

The old cemeteries hold a fascination for many of us, I think. You wander through and wonder about the people who lived and died - their lives, their loves.
