First we shape our cities then they shape us

Post by Bob Pacey » Mon May 11, 2015 9:48 am

Nev I watched a show on SBS I think about how city planners are now reverting to foot traffic in urban areas to encourage permanent residents. The more roads we built to accommodate vehicles the more we remove that sense of community.

That program is where I got the saying. It was very interesting.

Our council has done building work to turn part of the CBD into a " pedestrian friendly " area. The only thing I did note on that program is that these things seems to work in cities, Singleton is not a city, I don't think it will work very well here.
Besides it was about 15 degrees today and a howling Hunter Valley westerly wind, hardly inviting for strolling and al fresco dining. The only movement on the pedestrian mall was dry leaves scudding about.

There's a mall in Bendigo - it's usually a bare empty space. Bourke St. Mall in Melbourne is nothing more than a tram route and crossing place for pedestrians although the buskers make an interesting addition. On the whole, malls don't seem to work. You can have the space but it needs to have something happening in it to bring the people and liven it up.
