... here are some thoughts on it Bob ... for what they are worth... maybe not much.

Reciting at a carols function in December at least gives you some time to search for a suitable poem.

No doubt members over the years have written good Christmas pieces. The challenging bit however may be matching the poem with the occasion which I personally believe is a very sentimental time, rather than a time for comedy.

At the risk of sounding corny, I suggest you likely require a poem about the Christmas Spirit... happy children, family closeness, giving... kindness. Sentimentality. Capturing those important things in a poem that hopefully will truly move your audience, touch upon their emotions, and have them hanging on every word you say. To have them... spellbound? A big ask.

As you would know, some poems may be a good read but do not necessarily come across well as recitations, further complicating your search. A five minute bracket requires "a story".... one that is easily followed too by all ages... and yet not too long such that their attention is lost.

... there is one particular poem I have that I feel confident will do the job for you.

Even with my limited knowledge of such things, I still think it should fulfil all the above requirements for a Carols evening ... and get a Pass mark (at least) in your performance, which is certainly an honour to be asked to do. You obviously must have impressed someone with your reciting!

If you let me know your email, I will happily send it along for you to consider.... one of many you may receive perhaps... but one that, as I say, will do the job for you as a recitation I believe.

Anyway good luck with it. I am sure the evening will go well for you.

Cheers, Gary
