Hard yards mate and I am so sorry - but he deserves a dignified and stress free end - something most humans would also like but are unable to obtain.
It is quick and painless and if they know the vet and you are there with them at the end it is just another trip to the vet for them - they don't know the difference. You cry after he's gone - stay strong for him. I'll be crying with you
I am sure that HAMPL would be able to help your other mate though
