You're listening to the wrong station, that's the problem. ABC Classic FM. is the one for long trips.....trust me, I know about these things.

You could always buy a bunch of CDs. Never any doubting what country John Williamson comes from. Or John Schumann. Jimmy Little sounds pretty Australian. So do Kev Carmody and Archie Roach. Same with Mick Thomas. And David Bridie.

It goes back a long way Manfred.
I can remember when Bill Halley and Buddy Holly hit the Australian airwaves. Our local performers had to sound and look American to get any notice taken of them. Even the country music performers that I remember from that era dressed and sang in a way that I think owed as much to Roy Rogers as anyone else.

Australia has been burdened for ages by the ridiculous prejudice that someone or something can't be any good if they are home-grown. If they come from that magic land of " overseas " they are immediately feted as brilliant and significant.
It is still happening. Coles has the English acter Dawn French doing the spruiking for their latest ads. The Greater Building Society spent huge sums of money hiring American TV performer Jerry Seinfeld to speak their ads. Why would these people be more persuasive than any local ??

The Australian natural speech has managed to get some acceptance in popular music and I think that was due in part to the efforts of blokes like Rolf Harris, Lucky Starr and Jimmy Little. Slim Dusty is in there for the country mob I suppose.
We need more like them perhaps.
