Admiral Nelson and the reason you shouldn't drink rum

Post by Heather » Sat May 03, 2014 6:28 pm

When Admiral Nelson was killed in 1805 (fighting the french), his body was preserved in a barrel of rum for the voyage back to England but when the barrel was opened it was devoid of rum - the sailors having drilled a hole in the barrel and enjoyed Nelson-flavoured rum all the way back to England.

Apparently rum is sometimes called "Nelson's blood" and the royal navy sailors referred to drinking their daily rum ration as "tapping the Admiral". If the smell or taste of rum wasn't enough to put you off, that story would be.

In the British Parliament a member once held forth eloquently citing the " grand traditions of the Royal Navy ", Winston Churchill replied " What are they, rum, the lash and sodomy " :o :o

The timber from six thousand trees was used in the construction of The Victory, Admiral Nelson's ship.
