Re: Earth hour

I remember all those things Maureen. At the time we didn't believe that we were deprived, that's just the way it was, we didn't think that it needed to be any other way.

I get annoyed about the finger being pointed at us about plastic bags, excess packaging, throw- away one use articles etc. We didn't create the requirement for those things, the retailers did, for their purpose...more & more & more & more profit.

Me too Neville and also groceries packed into strong brown paper sacks which I do wish they would bring back. My neighbour saves plastic grocery bags for me because they come in very handy to use to discard doggie doo in - sure you don't need an explanation as to how etc etc...but the bottom line is that I also use them as garbage bin liners in the kitchen and bathroom as do other people I am sure. So now my supermarket has done away with them or charges for them...but is very happy to sell me packets of bin liners also made out of plastic....these apparently do not harm the enviroment :? or perhaps more to the point do not harm the retail profit margin.

Cynicism is a curse isn't it?

I am over the whole commercialized energy saving thing as I think it is just $$$ orientated towards retailers and industry.

I have never owned a dryer nor want too. Have had a $50 Govt energy check on all my appliances and house, and was told that I could do nothing to save any money of my bills as I was already doing it...my fridge is 44 years old - one year younger than my son and costs less than 2c per hour to run according to the hard wired little gadget that they installed. Total hourly cost of running my old Queensland with the A/C unit going all day - which most days it doesn't - comes in at way less than $2.20 per day. As long as my quarterly/90 day bill remains around the $200 mark I don't argue about it but I am not turning my lights off on Saturday. Usually only have one or maybe two on at any one time anyway so that would save less than 5 cents by my estimations.

As we speak I have a pedestal fan running on high, the computer, the fridge, and two electric clocks running using
0. 425 kw at a cost of 0.07cents per hour. When the fridge cuts out as it has just done that drops down to 0.151 kwh and 0.02 cents per hour

Maureen, I've got a good dryer at home, it's called...the sun.

There's local councils in Sydney that I know of, that fine people for hanging washing out in the sun to dry. Unbelievable but true. !!!! Detrimental to the appearance of a classy harbourside neighbourhood !!!!

Yes but back then we built with asbestos, dumped drums of oil and chemical biproducts in the ocean where it would do no harm, used lead based paints, drove V8 cars, pillaged the earth's natural resources, gave mothers Thalidomide etc. etc. But you are all correct, we didn't have those green bags. So is our earth's damage a modern disease caused in one generation?

You're quite right Neil .

What about Queenstown in Tasmania ?

I can remember back in the fifties and sixties when the the Parramatta River at Newington had black oily gunk all through the river banks. And the Cooks River in Sydney which has been a filthy sewer for many years.

I was an Earth Hour cynic, thinking how ridiculous it was with all this turning on and off of lights. Totally self-defeating. But I'm converted . . . I dunno if it was the vomitous media coverage or what, but I took part in Earth Hour 2011. Although I didn't turn my lights on and off just a measly once I flicked'em on and off as many times as I could to make up for all the non-believers.

Now Bob that is an intelligent and power saving hint...well done. Also just to add to that they are very easy also to insert into inside pot plants so you could actually have a few of them to really light the place up. Excellent tip Bob

Marty you are such a good helper to green causes...why didn't the rest of us think of that. That would have saved a lot especially if you had those fancy nancy twirly whirly bulb thingies in .
