C. J. Dennis Society A.G.M.

Post by Stephen Whiteside » Mon Sep 15, 2014 4:48 pm

Yesterday I spent a very pleasurable day at the C. J. Dennis Society AGM.

I was very happy to be elected as the new President of the Society.

I have placed a brief report on my blog, which can be found here:

Thanks, all.

Fair question, Neville. The Society arose out of the annual Toolangi C. J. Dennis Poetry Festival. It became clear there was a body of people who wanted to share their appreciation and enjoyment of C. J. Dennis. Put simply, that is our role.

The organisation of the annual festival and poetry competition is our primary task. There is potentially, however, a great deal of work we could do to bring to the public a broader awareness of his work. He was, indeed, very much more than "A Sentimental Bloke", even though next year marks the centenary of that masterpiece.

Personally, I also feel there is scope for a huge amount of historic research. We still know so little about the life of Dennis and his friends, although the little that we do know is quite fascinating.
