CAN I PICK YOUR BRAINS?

Post by Maureen K Clifford » Thu Mar 14, 2013 9:12 pm

Wonder if anyone out there can help me with recommendations re web sites. I need to set up a web site, something user friendly and preferably with FREE hosting or if not something very reasonably priced. The more I have researched the more confused I have become. I have been told that it is better to use an Australian site but don't know enough to know if that is correct.

I need a site that allows downloads of photos, video clips and can be linked into a pay pal facility.

Anyone out there have any info that might help me?

Cheers

Maureen

I did a fair bit of research a couple of years ago, Maureen. Things may have changed since then, but I decided to use Wordpress.

The problem with sites like the Google blogs is that you are at their mercy. I don't know all the technical terms or details, but a number of people have lost their blogs when the host has simply shut them down.

With Wordpress, you end up paying for your own domain name (I think that's right), which costs about $20. Then you pay Wordpress an annual fee, which is of the order of $100.

I'm now at the point where I'm considering paying somebody to develop a proper web-site for me. My current blog is, amongst other things, very crowded, and needs a much better lay-out. Such are the limitations of DIY though, of course, some people are much better at this than others. (I struggle.)

Thanks Stephen for that, it is helpful - I am not sure if it is a web site or a blog site that I should be looking at. I am thinking that perhaps a web site is too static and a blog site has more manoeuvrability

Your info here indicates a blog site is what you use currently. I suppose one could have both :? Anyway food for thought, hope to get something underway sooner rather than later.

Cheers

You can have a blog within a web-site, Maureen. That is what I will probably eventually do.
