doing a 'Terry'

Post by Zondrae » Tue Nov 20, 2012 3:27 pm

G'day all,

We used to have a phrase 'doing a Pauline' which means 'please explain'

Now we have 'doing a Terry' which means .. 'win the lot'

Good on you Terry for enriching our language.

G/day Zondrae,

There's no doubt that a heck of a lot of luck was needed to achieve that result.

Reading the judges report it seems that he had settled on the one that won and perhaps the one that came second was up there as well. But after reading his and other judges reports on how they often agonize over which of the other better poems to award, I expect that is where a huge amount of luck came into it. I'm guessing it was more by chance than anything else that had him select the other two of mine.

Another interesting thing is that I usually enter three poems in our local W.A. comps but as I mentioned elsewhere there was provision for 4 entries on the entry form so I added another poem to complete the form. Perhaps if I had just entered the three poems it may have completely changed the outcome - who knows?

Cheers Terry

Nah Terry you gotta be kidding Mate, you won them all fair and square and the way you write there will be a lot more.

No luck at all just a craftsman at work.

Cheers

Well Terry,

You should thank our 'mother hen' for teaching us to 'polish, polish, polish'. As you have said - these poems may have done not so well in other comps but with a second, third, forth look and adjustment they have finally shone.

Your work, and your faith in it, have finally been rewarded. Congratulations again.

Thanks Zondrae and Maureen,

There is no doubt that if you're willing there is a wealth of information and help available here on the forum with some wonderful poets to learn from if you so desire.
I also think we all learn from each other as well, I don't comment as much as I used to (more out of fear of putting my foot in it than anything else) but I do take notice of the discussions and we are fortunate to have the knowledgeable input from some of the best in the business.
I haven't been posting anything for awhile mainly because while I was away this year I made notes on several possible poems and have been trying to clear the decks so to speak.

Cheers Terry

Wow Terry, well done. I haven't been on here much lately and almost missed the post about your fabulous win. I agree with the others, no luck involved, just pure talent, which was obvious right from the very start.

Thanks Leonie,
It doesn't seem all that long ago when we, along with the old gang, used to encourage each other in our earlier efforts both here and on Bush Verse, I still have fond memories of those days.

Cheers Terry
