2017 Poets Gather at Boondooma Homestead.

Boondooma Homestead

Boondooma Homestead was the centre of the original Boondooma Station, which was settled in 1846 by three young Scotsmen. It was originally bounded by the hill east of Proston, Brovinia Creek to the north, Darr Creek to the south, and the Dividing Range to the west – a total of nearly 1,000 square miles.

The homestead is one of the few remaining examples of an elegant wooden home built 1854-55. Visitors can walk through several buildings constructed in the 1850s, and spend time in the gardens, enjoying trees and vines also dating from the 1850s.

Many/some people find connections with family members who lived or worked on Boondooma Station in years gone by.

Detailed information is available about our buildings, museum and the people of Boondooma Station.

Spirit of the Bush

Our “Spirit of the Bush” Balladeers' & Heritage Muster was first held in 2001.

This event originally started as a fund-raiser for Boondooma Homestead, and has since grown to be a successful annual event with attendees from all over Australia. They stay for the full five days of continual entertainment by balladeers & Poets.

It has been such a success, that it is on the Grey Nomad calendar of events. There’s plenty of bush camping for 700-800 vans.

The entertainment begins each day at 7:30 with a Poet’s Breakfast, followed by invited artists and walk-up performers well into the evening. As there is only one stage, the walk ups give only two items at a time and return later, time permitting.

A walk-up Balladeers & Poets competition is held on the front veranda of the old Homestead, and is well supported by the visitors. This is judged and prizes awarded. There are various stalls and working displays

An Anzac service is held on Anzac day during the festival and a Church service on Sunday, for those wishing to attend.

Volunteers prepare and cook a variety of foods which are available for sale all day. We also operate a bar for a faithful few. We are always looking for more volunteers.

In April many folk gathered again this year to enjoy the festival.

From Thursday to Sunday we have a two hour Poet's Brekky and this year we had John Major, Gary Lowe, John Best, Ron Liekeffet, Brenda Joy, Jack Drake, Chris Webster, Brian Weir, Clarrie Weller and myself performing.

Thursday and Friday we usually get a few walk ups to have a go and their is also a competition on the Saturday morning down on the Homestead verandah.

It is a great festival Merv. For those who do not know, Merv is the tireless MC for all five days. He keeps everything organised and all egos intact. :D He does a great job and must be exhausted by the end of it.

One good aspect is the insistence on material presented being Australian. This is in line with the ABPA's aims of preserving and expanding our own culture. All the invited poets are members of the ABPA and Merv is willing to promote the ABPA from the stage.

Thank you Merv for your efforts.
Hal and Brenda
Always strive for total awareness.
