Just read it Bob. I'm right there along side of you.
I still remember the days before origin when our best players would go to NSW clubs and then turn up in a blue jersey to thump the home based Qld team in the interstate series. Hate's not a strong enough word at origin time.
Just as an aside, I taught at Cannon Hill State School for 12 years. Wally was a pupil there for all of his primary years before going to Bris. State High and playing Union with the Aust Schoolboys team.
Love the poem.

An oldie of mine - warts and all.

STATE OF ORIGIN

The linesmen are ready
the ref’s on the field,
but the players mingle still.
One has a ribald joke to tell,
another, a nervous chill.

The joints of their limbs
seem empty and queer
their stomachs a hollow pit.
Adrenalin pumps to hungry veins,
their mouths now to dry to spit.

They meet in the tunnel
by shoulder and hip
their eyes a straight steely stare.
Their gaze is fixed on a patch of field
bright green in electric glare.

The masses erupt
as the teams pour out,
heroes and villains to thrill!
The roar cascades around the stands
and spills out across the hill.

The whistle is blown,
the ball's in the air,
the great warriors are set!
Time stands still for a million hearts.
The Maroons and Blues, are met!
