Media Release:

The inaugural Sutherland Shire Literary Competition is set to celebrate the exciting breadth of literary talent that exists not only across the Sutherland Shire but the whole of our nation, with entries open to Australian residents from February 5, 2018.

The new competition aims to promote the rich cultural heritage of the Sutherland Shire whilst contributing to the diverse and rich tradition of literary practice in Australia.

The exciting new initiative was conceived by Sutherland Shire Councillor Barry Collier, the 2017 winner in the ‘Free Verse Poetry’ category of the prestigious Henry Lawson National Literary Awards.

“We have long recognised our achievements in sport, music and art in Sutherland Shire, but we now need to nurture, promote and celebrate literary creativity.

“This will only build on and strengthen the love of literature and reading fostered by our libraries as well as the contribution of our local writing groups," Councillor Collier said.

The competition celebrates the joy of the written word in both poetry and prose and has received resounding support from fellow Sutherland Shire Councillors Tom Croucher and Michael Forshaw.

Entries will be open for submission from Monday 5th February, 2018 until Monday 30th April, 2018.

Australian residents over 18 years of age are invited to submit original works in the following categories:

 Traditional (rhyming) verse (max. 80 lines)
 Free verse (max. 80 lines)
 Short stories (max. 2000 words)

First place in each category will receive $1,000, with other generous prizes on offer.

An additional ‘Shire Resident’s Prize’ may also be awarded to recognise the best local talent in those three categories.
