Go Poppa Go

63 - Go Poppa Go

Grandad bought a Phoenix
black and shiny chrome,
66 Dodge plated,
proudly drove it home.
The colour for the desert
didn’t pass the test,
way too much absorption
reflection was the best.

A tin of paint selected,
black just wasn’t right,
three and a half coats later
the roof was painted white.
Now he had a motorcar,
fit for desert driving,
no aircon, windows down,
a constant breeze providing.

Automatic gearbox
his first to see and drive,
gears were all push button,
in total there were five.
One to four were forward
selected to traverse,
R for race we all would yell,
but R was for reverse.

A dare devil at the least
as everyone agreed,
Grandad would try anything,
he had a need for speed.
Everyone who’s anyone
would have to take a ride
he’d race it down the airstrip
with his passenger by his side.

Just like low flying,
he’d ask the Dodge for power,
and pointing at the needle
yell, 100 mile an hour.
I guess we thought it normal
we were never going slow
but tearing up the country
yelling Go Grandad Go.

50 years and counting,
my grandsons in the back,
4 year old so joyful,
heading down the track.
Sitting at the stop lights
cars would start to flow,
the boys would always let it rip
Go Poppa Go.

Our lives are moving forward
there’s no looking back
life is like a rainbow
further down the track.
Go Poppa Go,
expressed with so much joy,
a statement of excitement
from every girl and boy.
