49 - FIFO

Mining jobs everywhere,
right across the land,
iron ore, oil and gas,
through rocks and drifting sand.
Employment is significant,
shifts on change each way,
air strips on location,
Fly In Fly Out each day.

Had a crack at mining,
open cut, Leigh Creek,
coal hauled to a crusher,
many loads a week.
Training in a Euclid,
old and rough as guts,
dust and noise relentless,
in and out of cuts.

Moved on to a Wabco,
next to drive in line,
economy class to business,
80 ton a time.
Upgrade to a Terex
shift-work never fun,
overburdened, big boys,
150 Ton.

Mining township living,
shopping centre, school,
pub, golf and tennis,
even a swimming pool.
Eight hour shift rotation,
to work and back by bus,
stuck it out a year or two,
it just wasn’t for us.

Invited back to Paradise,
Moomba oil and gas,
FIFO from Adelaide,
many and varied tasks.
Mobile camps to live in,
across the Cooper Basin,
drilling rigs to service,
two and one rotation.

Fabrication, stand pipes,
fencing sumps and ponds,
water carts, everywhere,
near and far beyond.
SA in to Queensland,
Ballera, to Mungerannie,
every shift a different camp,
men there were so many.

Up and down the Cooper,
preparing pads and roads,
rigs, drilling rods and mud,
many tons per load.
Water that is potable,
trucked in long the way,
dust suppression on the list,
each and every day.

Mining jobs everywhere,
right across the land,
iron ore, oil and gas,
through rocks and drifting sand.
Employment is significant,
shifts on change each way,
air strips on location,
Fly In Fly Out each day.
