HEROES IN HIGH VIS

HEROES IN HIGH VIS ... Maureen Clifford © The#ScribblyBarkPoet

When you hear the word hero most think of fatiques
and a broad shouldered bloke with a gun
in a desert or war zone somewhere overseas
fighting terrorists whilst on the run.
Or we think of our soldiers who fought out in Nam
or those boys on the Kokoda track.
Or armed horseman in Egypt - Beersheba their goal
and the horses that never came back.

Well we're right, they were heroes, and deserve our praise
but the heroes I'm seeing today
are spread pretty thin 'cross Australia's soil
and they're not giving up - No! No way!
They are tired and they're weary and blackened with smoke
and they literally fight till they fall -
they're the men and women of our bushfire brigades
and our regular fire fighters an all.

They are fighting a fight like the world's never seen
venturing into territory new.
And those dragon's released are all venting their ire
but they're still held in check by the few.
A thin yellow line of just everyday folk
who stand up and fight face to face
Bloody heroes they are! Everyone of them there
trying hard those hot flames to erase.

And it's hard to imagine where they find the guts
to stand up 'gainst the heat and the roar.
But they do, and they do it time and time again
for they know just what they're fighting for.
They are fighting for you Mate, they're fighting for me
and are trying to save farms and stock,
whilst the sight of lost animals moves them to tears
they've no time to give in to the shock.

So help where you can folks, a drink or a feed
or a few bob thrown into the can.
A few ice cold beers at the end of their day
would be welcomed by woman and man.
Give them your support for amongst us they walk
just doing what has to be done
unassuming folks who all answered the call
They're our heroes each and every one.
