21st Century Angst

Post by Neville Briggs » Wed May 30, 2018 8:48 pm

TWENTY FIRST CENTURY ANGST

Halt the presses hold the line
A crisis comes upon our time

Danger dogs us every day
World War Three is on the way

Kim tries thump and Trump says bash
Banks all swell with stolen cash

Bondi beach is on the boil
Meghan Markle’s made a royal

Malcolm makes more solemn vows
Satire sinks those sacred cows

Bancroft bodgied up the ball
Wiki drives us up the wall

Someone said offensive words
Marauding magpies maul our birds

Apocalypse grabs at the gate
Salvation surely seems so late

Debt depletes the public purse
Poets verse gets worse and worse

We have to hope and keep our heads
Or might be murdered in our beds.

Very pithy and clever Neville ... one line reminds me of the wonderful “Glugs of Gosh” ... where the king said “Bosh!”

Cheers

Thanks for the encouragement Shelley, Stephen. :) I'm breathing Ross.

I have been reading lately about the ancient Anglo-Saxon poetry which had no end rhyme but each line had a fixed syllabic count with alliteration making the " tune" of the poem. I thought I would try my hand at my version of an old troubadour.

Good one Neville - punchy and clever. 'Keeping our heads' in today's world is not always easy, that's for sure - neither is watching others lose theirs!

Thanks Catherine. :)

Um sorry y, I should have been clearer. That is my troubadour effort here. Each line has two or more words starting with the same letter ( alliteration ) except for line five which has assonance.

Sorry Neville, my mistake. It was the “no end rhyme” comment that tricked me into thinking this poem wasn’t the troubadour one, though in every respect it seemed like it.

Yes, I did notice the alliteration (one of my favourite poetry tools).

Cheers Shelley. ;)

I have had a go at the banging a drum while reciting trick, I can't do the troubadour trick of banging the drum with one hand and playing a tune on a wind instrument held in the other hand. The late renowned musicologist David Munrow could do it. I've heard him .
