mums little hidden treasures
mums little hidden treasures
Hi All, have been posting little lately as been busy elsewhere. Our poets breakfast where Zondrae rules comes up with a new topic ever week. This week its "baby boots". How is a bloke going to write about that. As Zondrae says, Have a go, you will be surprised, so here's my effort.
Mums Little hidden treasures.
It was the saddest day in our family life,
when our mother passed away.
Her years of toil had finally ended,
when God called her home that day.
The theory, that grown men never cry,
was blown away for good.
Not a dry eye could be found in that circle,
where ten family members stood.
A life of hardship was her legacy,
which stood the ravages of time.
But this tired old body bore no signs,
of many hardships we would call a crime..
Landing on these shores from Ireland,
the family toiled on hardened ground.
Then wandered further inland,
until good fertile soil was found.
They made a life from nothing,
until mother earth gave some reprieve.
For their will to keep on fighting,
good fortunes they received.
Married now, a loving husband,
and children at her feet.
Still the hardships kept rolling in,
more challenges they'd meet.
Ten offspring was a daunting task,
and although the times were tough.
Not a sign of anguish on her face,
she calmly done her stuff.
Sifting through her meagre belongings,
we came upon this hidden box.
To our dismay the contents took our breath. away,
Ten neatly wrapped pairs of baby shoes and socks.
The reasons for this treasure not yet known
until we unwrapped each one and read her note
Each offspring in their order
and of the message I do quote.
“These are the first shoes that you wore
so cherish them with love
Their presence helped me remember
and too thank the Lord above”.
“Treasure them for what their worth
and you will find the strength of heart
As you walk those dark and lonely places
remember these shoes were with you from the start”.

What a lovely poem Noel. I still have my eldest daughter's first shoes. My second daughter was burnt at 12mths and I have her tiny little body suit. I kept all their baby teeth! Funny the things mothers do.

You are right Heather that's just what mums do. Beautiful poem Noel ? I hope it is Noel. I lost my mum when I was 16 and I still have some of the things she collected and kept. They were important to no one else but her.
The trait must have rubbed off because I have kept a lot of things in what is known as " Dad's Special Box " and love to share the contents with the grandkids every once in a while.
Thanks for stirring the memories

Re: mums little hidden treasures
g'day Noel,
Well it has taken a while for you to produce another one of your 'bolters' but I think you have done it.
I don't have one word down yet. Been too busy with other things. Have a 'do' on today but may get time between now and Wednesday. I have sent into prime to have our Poetry group advertised on TV community billboard. They give no guarantee that it will get on air. Depends on how many others they get. Hope we make it. I guess they give preference to worthy charity events.

because there was ten in our family Mum wisely marked every possesion she owned who it was to go too. She must have realised there would be disputes. Today we all came together for my brothers 90th birthday. All ten of us a still alive ( well partically) Our total age has now reached 820 years. None of the family drank or smoked! but still had a great fruitful life.
Re: mums little hidden treasures
Noel I bet there aren't too many families that can boast a combined age of 820 years. That's amazing.

G'day, Noel.
An eye opener mate.
They don't come much better.
What a wonderful woman your mother was.
Your poem is very well written, full of sentiment.
Regards,
John

Just beautiful Noel.
It reminded me of a discovery my mother and I made after the death of my favourite aunt. We found a shoe box hidden away in her bedroom with a collection of little mementos of my childhood and early adulthood. She didn't include a lovely note like your Mum but it was so touching to see how much she must have cared just to collect these little things, some of which she actually pinched from my Mum, because Mum said "I always wondered where that got to" about one or two little things.
