My Teddy and I

Post by Shelley Hansen » Thu Oct 27, 2016 7:21 am

Here's my poem from the "adults writing for children" section in the recent Toolangi CJ Dennis written poetry competition. It was given a HC by adult judges - and 2nd by the children. I'm delighted! Congratulations to all my fellow winners.

MY TEDDY AND I
(c) Shelley Hansen 2016

My Teddy and I
flew away to the sky
Sunday night when we should have been sleeping.
The moonlight shone bright
through my window that night
and the flickering starlight was peeping.

I’d dozed right away
when my Teddy said, “Hey …
there’s a spaceship outside and it’s waiting
to take us afar
to a super-bright star –
so there’s no time to be hesitating.”

I sprang out of bed
nearly bumping my head,
and we jumped in before they could find us.
We suddenly found
we rose up from the ground
and were leaving the earth far behind us.

We landed on Mars
which had lots of red cars
and an ogre who looked like my teacher!
I saw Aunty Pat
who’d turned into a cat
that was crossed with a monkey-like creature!

We sailed further out
and I heard a loud shout –
it was Dad as he tried to detain us.
I spotted my Mum
and it made me quite glum
to discover she lived on Uranus!

We wanted to play
in the white Milky Way
but the end of this tale is appalling ...
a monster black hole
swallowed body and soul
and we felt ourselves falling … and falling …

… until with a bump
I woke up with a jump
as the sunlight shone right through the curtain.
Beside me in bed
was my faithful friend Ted.
He had saved me, of that I was certain.

I tried to explain
for to me, it was plain –
but Mum said, “I don’t know what you’re thinking!
It’s certainly clear
you’ve been dreaming, my dear!”
But she didn’t see … Teddy was winking!

Terrific, Shelley, and congratulations!

No doubt your mother's shoes were sprinkled with Uranian dust, too - the hypocrite!

Thanks Stephen - and likewise, congratulations to you too!

So that's what the sparkly stuff on the doormat was ... Uranian dust! I might have known!! ;)

Cheers

G'day Shelley.

Might have to watch the pineapple juice as it can ferment and strange images appear. Lol.

Interesting to see where folks imaginations wonder off to.
