Some people like the summer
when the sun is in the air.
and others like the autumn
with it’s flowers oh so fair.

Some others savour springtime
crisp air and sweet birdsong.
But me I love the chill of winter
Cause then the origin is on.

Can you hear that distant rumble
can you see the lightening crash.
Can you feel the passion building
as they ready for the clash.

Both teams are primed and ready
expectation fills the air.
Queensland holds the shield
and I think that’s only fair.

They’ve been the better side for ages
something no one can deny.
Cause the Blues are bloody hopeless
and I can tell you why.

They change their team each series
while Queensland keeps the same
and they really have no passion
for them it’s just another game.

But to Queensland it’s a battle
the greatest sporting test.
No quarter ever asked or given
to see which state is the best.

The Blues will try to tell you
that this team will make a mark.
but the passion of the Canetoads
will blow them off the park.

The Blues look so good on paper
this teams better then the rest.
But they just don’t make the grade
when Queensland puts them to the test.

Oh they always try to find it
that thing that makes our teams so great.
But it’s with you on the day you’re born
and it’s not a thing you can create.

The pride we have in Queensland
a passionate love of where we live.
Will see players make that extra effort
when is seems there’s nothing left to give.

The Blues will blood new players
and this games in Sydney town.
but no matter who they pick
Queensland will bring them down.

So pick ya best you roaches
but you’re sure to shed a tear.
and the victory cry of

New South Welshmen love their footy,
in the sky blue we are proud,
we grew up with the Sydney comp
our passion voiced aloud.
We cheered for Newtown, Norths and Wests
for Manly and the Eels
for Penrith and for Parra-,
you’ve no inkling how it feels,
to have the comp blown open
and to let New Zealand play
with teams from north the border
and from Melbourne , what’s the lay?
Newcastle and the ACT
all joined the footy throng,
does South and West Australia join?
That really would be wrong.
Support’s now stretched too far, too wide
to keep the passion pure,
to win the State of Origin
remains the only cure.

The Cockies Whine

Some lament the loss of players
others fear the games demise.
Some think it just needs Sydney teams
to keep this great game alive.

But in years gone by those players
who dazzled when they stepped and ran
were poached from clubs north of the border
up here in our North Queensland.

Artie Beetson, Rocket Reddy, Kerry Boustead
played for The Blues as it may seem.
while Queensland scraped and grovelled
just to field a decent team.

Then in the year of nineteen eighty
The contract sheet was ripped and torn
and all players were allowed to play
for the state where they were born.

The blues just had no answer
to this surging Queensland tide.
They just could not find a way
to combat the passion and the pride.

The rules have changed with time
and are really not the same.
But you cannot discount the passion
with which they play the game.

Some still say it was the wrong step
but pride always goes before a fall.
But I love it cause it showcases
THE GREATEST GAME OF ALL.

Queensland won eight years on the trot then needed a rest in 2014 so let the roaches win one series then took it off them again last year.

Blow By Blow

At last the teams have kicked off
Eighty thousand fans all roar.
The Origin has started
and you can feel it in your core.

Tough and hard and torrid
as forwards sort each other out.
This is gonna be a close one
of that there is no doubt.

I’ve never know it to be different
the Blues forward wall like bricks.
But then Gallen pulled a high shot
and Thurston drove it through the sticks.

The Blues had all the running
set after set they drew.
But Queensland hung in tough
and well they almost saw it through.

But possession wins you games
and the Blue tide surged away.
Then Maloney drew defenders
and Cordner made them pay.

A wayward kick from Reynolds
and the Blues were up by two.
Their tails were up and flying
but then the Queensland spirit grew.

With the half time siren looming
The cane toads showed a solid core.
Thurston fired a pass along the backline
and Gagai slid in out wide to score.

Six points to four a cracker
and a full half still to go.
The game was in the balance
as they battled blow for blow.

The second half a bloody grind
as the Blues were playing rough.
They forced repeat after repeat
with the Canetoads hanging tough.

Gagai went close once in the cornor
Cronk near scored off that kick.
but the blues had all the ball
and their backs were looking slick.

I cried noooo as Morris went close
but the bunker ruled no try.
The time was ticking quickly
and I knew the end was nigh.

Pressure, Pressure, Pressure
and the cane toads wore it all.
With no gas left in any tank
we heard that Queensland call.

The blues they tried a new spine
and although they all stood tall.
The Queensland passion won through
showing you can win without the ball.

The next game is on in Brisbane
and though all Queenslands on a high.
We really won’t be happy until
we hold that cherished shield on high.
