INDEPENDENCE LOST

INDEPENDENCE LOST

Foraging through chests of drawers
and boxed up bags of bric-a-brac,
sweet memories of mine and yours
came trickling, then flooding back.

Embraced by warm remembrances,
awash in thoughts of yester year,
I sighed a sigh of time gone by
which heralded a lonely tear.

Age tends to cage us, trapped within
these brittle bones and failing limbs,
to gaze upon a youthful time
of playful romps and summer swims.

Where went the care free nonchalance,
the chasing of the surf and sun,
buoyed by a sheer exuberance
of independence fin'lly won.

It disappeared into a chest,
along with independence lost.
The price paid for a length of life
Is learning to accept the cost.

Very poignant, Allan. It really resonates with me at the moment, watching the sad slow decline of my Mum, aged 91.

Cheers, Shelley
