A bit of tongue in cheek nonsense

BERTIE ON THE PHONE

Why hello Jenny darling this is Bertie don’t you know,
extending invitations to our pukka poets show.
It’s for the literati and a real poetic treat,
and anyone who’s anyone is sure to book a seat.

They say we’re nearly booked out - there’ll be twenty there at least,
and after entertainment, we’re to have a smashing feast.
There’s cucumber sandwiches, with the crust cut off, of course,
and lots of lovely champers, Pater has a useful source.

No Mater won’t be coming – poor old dear has lost the plot.
this morning as I practiced, she insisted it was rot.
Some cretin bushy poet --- yes the ones that always rhyme,
has turned her to the dark side – which I’m sure must be a crime.

Another convert. Great stuff Terry.

But I think now that I've figured out
Why they do poems that are sublime.
Yeah I reckon that not one of them
Knows how to make them bloody rhyme.

This is the last verse still working on the rest.

Sunday the rest day the best day of all.

You might be interested to know this Terry.

The contemporary Australian poet, Jamie Grant, has put out a book entitled "100 Australian Poems You Need To Know" ( Hardie Grant, 2008 )

There is a fair selection of unrhymed "contemporary" styled poems, but Jamie Grant has also selected for inclusion; Since the Country Carried Sheep ( Harry Morant ), The Man from Ironbark ( Banjo Paterson ), Where the Dead Men Lie ( Barcroft Boake ) ,The Bastard from the Bush ( anon ? ), When your Pants begin to Go ( Henry Lawson ) ,The Death of Ben Hall ( Will Ogilvie ), Dummy Bridge ( C J Dennis ) Said Hanrahan ( P J Hartigan ) and others.

Jamie Grant says in the introduction, that he chose the poems with no other criteria than his own enjoyment.

What do you reckon about that ?
Maybe there doesn't need to be a rigid line of demarcation ( the dark side ? ) as some might think if we apply the same criteria as Jamie Grant.

G/day Neville,
As I said all tongue in cheek mate.
It may surprise you to know that I have had a go at most styles, I still prefer Rhyming but have read some very good free verse with excellent rhythm. Some of what seems to me to be more radical doesn't appeal.
But let's not be too thinned skinned here, there are plenty of barbs aimed at rhyming verse as you well know, but at the end of the day who really cares, certainly not me.
