OH RIVER GUM

Oh River Gum
Oh river gum, your sprawling arms embrace an azure sky,
denude of wisps of pure white fleece that breezes hurried by.
Mottled branches stretching ever upward in a yawn,
awakening in morning light with each and every dawn.
Oh river gum, protector of the river and its banks,
I settle back against your bark, and verily give thanks
for watching over those who come to shelter in your shade
and flourish in the waters of a haven that you made.
Oh river gum, your beauty goes beyond the written word,
beyond the poet's dreaming, beyond the singing bird.
Beyond the artist's palette and beyond a lover's song.
Your beauty lies at riverbank, at home where you belong.
