A NEW RELIGION

A NEW RELIGION
I want to replace God with Good, completely start anew.
I'd design a new religion, and I'd start with just a few
of those rules and all thiose teachings that seem common to all sects,
combining them to wind up with a universal text
that doesn't talk of Jesus or Mohammed or of God
but focused on what we know is decent and is good.
Wouldn't then we all agree to live as one in peace.
The Muslim, Jew and Gentile would completely be at ease.
And even all the atheists could join us as we pray
for good without the gods and prophets getting in the way.
Now I'm not saying for a moment that there hasn't been
a lot of good done in the world. I know that I have seen
how faith can offer hope to some, while sisters and the brothers
get their strength from their belief to minister to others.
If religion teaches peace and love, then what is in a name?
Why must we choose between each brand? Why can't they be the same?
Every culture, every colour, every race and every creed
could live in peace and harmony, if only they agreed
not to focus on the gospels ,ancient parables and fables,
but come together, one and all, to sit at conference tables
and hammer out a doctrine that each leader can agree
would serve us in future. Surely only then we'd see
an end to conflict 'round the world, an end to those debates
where they keep banging on and on ...and on -oh how it grates.
Rabbis, priests and atheists, all very learned men
engaging in an argument that neither side can win.
So all the Muslims, and the Christians and the Hindus and the Jews
can just go on believing in whatever God they choose.
The churches, temples, synagogues and mosques will all be filled
while innocents around the world continue to be killed,
and folk like me just sit and watch and beggar the question why -
In the name of God, (or Gods) why do so many need to die?
