Shop Fever

Shop Fever

I must go down to the shop again, to the quaint little corner store;
The one with the newspaper ads out the front, and the sweet little bell on the door,
And all I ask is a bottle of milk, and maybe a loaf of bread,
And a packet of smokes, and a chocolate bar, and a brief little chat with Fred.

I must go down to the shop again. I don’t get much further these days.
That’s the extent of my walking range – no more than a couple of k’s.
There once was a time I could walk for miles – to the bottle shop, and beyond,
But now it’s just to the corner shop – there, and the ducks on the pond.

I must go down to the shop again. I owe them a couple of bucks,
And I do need some bread to break in my hand, and feed to the bobbing brown ducks,
And maybe Fred’ll come down for a while, and we’ll stand at the edge of the pond,
And we’ll cast back our minds to the early days, and we’ll think of the Great Beyond.
