A verse for Easter
A VERSE FOR EASTER
I used to go to Sunday church
and hear the Bible story,
they told us all how Jesus died
and gives us hope for glory.
I haven't any use for that,
I gave it all away.
I'm sure now, that all we can do
is living for the day.
But what if He should come again
and try to claim my heart ?
Well ! that's too much, I'd see Him off,
get rid of Him quick smart.
I'd sneer at all his foolish talk
of love and Heaven's Kingdom,
and all that rot of sin and death
for which He pays a ransom.
I'd help to tie Him hand and foot
and drag Him to a cell.
I'd spit on Him and smash His face
and " Crucify !! " I'd yell.
But what if someone says to me
" You used to be His friend "
I'll say " I've never known this man "
That's what I will contend.
If He should turn and see me there
and look me in the eye,
I think that I will feel like crap
and crawl away to die.

One part of the story I like Neville is He gave Peter a chance to change his "I've never known this man" to "Lord you know that I love you."
And whether we are believers or not, making good some wrong we have done to others is a powerful thing to do.

Re: A verse for Easter
Thanks for the feedback Matt and Robyn.
I think Judas was too religious, I reckon that was his problem Matt.
Robyn,
I saw Tom Cruise interviewed on the TV. In a movie, he had played the part of a German Officer, Claus von Stauffenberg, who had tried to assassinate Hitler during WWII.
Tom Cruise said how he hated Hitler and how he would never have been taken in to follow a person like that. I couldn't help but think; if you had been there Mr Cruise, you would certainly have been taken in like everyone else, you're kidding yourself. It's easy from this distance to claim that we would have acted differently and better than those who have gone before us. The easiest person to fool is ourself.

Hi Ya Neville
Interesting poem. I think Judas was impulsive and very human; after all he made a quick buck out of the whole deal. Peter just did not want to know about it until it was all over. All sounds just like today; could say they were both like anyone of us. Thanks for the poem.

Food for thought indeed Neville. Good job!
I dunno if you feel it too, but it looks to me like ''the mob'' are slowly becoming disillusioned with all the bling surrounding our 'traditional' holidays. Maybe that's just me in my dotage....but my young ones (apart from the toddlers) are growling more & more about Christmas, Easter etc & Society in general, being so commercialised. Perhaps there is hope...?

Re: A verse for Easter
Good to hear from you Glenny.
I think you're onto something. The fact that the big monopoly grocers now stack the shelves with Christmas goods in September and put out piles of chocolate eggs in February has to affect people's perception of what is going on. And what used to be simple cheap token gift giving has become a multi-million dollar industry. When I was young I thought it was a great treat at Easter to get get one small chocolate egg and at Christmas I got a book of children's stories ...one book. I loved it.
It's the law of diminishing returns, the more we try to jack things up, the more we become unsatisfied so we jack them up more, that doesn't satisfy so we jack it up more and more. But the process isn't endless, it tends to eventually implode.
And I think that the same process is at work in the " vaudeville " antics that you mentioned coming into poetry recitals.
Looks like I have hijacked ny own thread. Oh well
. Good thoughts Glenny.
