G'day Joe,
If your Dad was the one who used fencing wire for 'everything' then he must have been the inspiration for that lovely poem 'Her Bit of Number Eight'. I'll have to go and look up who wrote it .... I'll get back to you shortly.

G'day Joe,
Reading again your tribute to your Dad, showing a snippet of how things used to be.. reminded me - If your Dad used fencing wire for everything, then maybe he was the inspiration for the poem 'Her Bit of Number Eight'. This lovely poem was the runner up to Glenny's winner of the Bronze Swagman 2007. Written by Elizabeth Ward, it tells about a bride who received a bit of no 8 in place of a gold band as her wedding ring. It goes on to tell how her 'man' had taken a bit of wire and hammered it out flat before bending it round and polishing it up with sand til it looked like silver. Then he melted a tiny gold nugget he found in a creek and used the gold to hold the wire together. Even, as their life improved and she was eventually given a 'real' ring, she wore the bit of no.8 til she passed away.

I remember Liz Ward, she used to be a school teacher and was one of our earliest members of the ABPA.
I think she now lives in Brisbane.

Re: FENCING WIRE
Why is it that blokes can do almost anything with a bit of wire, yet they can't manage a little roll of sticky tape? My Dad can't even find the beginning of the tape cos of his big ol' fingers and not-so-good eyesight so he resorts to gaffer tape. My hubbie can find the end to unroll the tape, but ends up making a bird's nest out of it instead of getting it on the present! The kids think it's hilarious.

A tradition that I appreciated from time to time.
Not being cashed up tends to make one do with what they can find, but it often gets you by.
