A DREAM
Standing alone in a crowd full of people,
I watched as they laid the departed to rest.
In my hand I was clutching a piece of a puzzle,
a shiny brass key, which I held to my breast.
The mourners and clergy were walking towards me.
I dropped to my haunches, I fell to the ground.
It felt like the weight of the world on my shoulders
As veil shrouded faces were gathering 'round.
'Pray tell us, good sir, what's this key that you're grasping?'
I knew not the lock nor the door it would open,
nor why that this key was entrusted to me.
I tried then to speak, but there were no words spoken.
'The man we have buried is worth a small fortune,
Surely you know what this key will unlock?
Tell us all now while we all will bear witness,
or should we subject you to time in the stock?'
'Back off!' came a cry from the grief stricken widow
'Do you fail to see that this man has no clue?'
'My husband has left you this key for a reason.
There's something he surely was wanting from you.'
Look 'round, my good fellow, perhaps someone nearby
may long for those riches the key will unlock?'
'But take not your time, lad, for time is of essence
and time disappears with each tick of a clock.'
A wisp of a girl in a pale lilac dress started
sobbing and weeping. I reached out my hand
'I think that this key is the key to your heart
and she looked up as if all was as it was planned.
The girl then arose as a beautiful woman,
for she held the key to my hopes and my dreams.
For riches and treasures can take on new meanings
and wealth and good fortune not all as it seems.
