Happy Birthday Henri

Today is the birthday of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a wonderful French artist.

Is that anything to do with bush poetry. In a way perhaps. The highly awarded art of Henri's day was the salon art which depicted Greek gods and goddesses and grand historical events. Henri looked at the ordinary people, the real people of the streets, bars, nightclubs and brothels of Paris. C.J. Dennis of the canvas, observing the demi-monde ?? :)
Today Henri's art is famous, the salon painters forgotten as irrelevant.

If you see what I mean. Art that connects to the grittiness of real life is living and breathing art that will endure. Hopefully bush poetry done well can manage that.

And Henri reminds us. A toast to Henri's birthday ( not in a glass of absinthe though  )
