BIG FELLA SANDY RIVER

From the Einasleigh, ancient uplands, to Gulf waters and the sea
runs the mighty Gilbert watercourse for one and all to see.
And the upper catchment region was the Kunjen people’s home
where for eons tribal owners used the land to hunt and roam.

When the monsoons bring large rainfalls how it powers a mighty flow
but the dry times leave a sandy bed as northern folk well know.
When I walked this bed I saw myself what locals know firsthand,
that big fella sandy river is a lifeline in their land.

Chorus

Hey big fella sandy river you’re a mighty watercourse
from your Einasleigh, ancient uplands where you do begin your source.
Through the great savannah country to the mangroves by the sea
Hey big fella sandy river you are truly legendry.

Through the centuries you have free flowed but now sources do relate
there’s commercial enterprise who plan to dam and irrigate.
They have dreams of Asia’s new food bowl away up in the North
and State Government is backing them to take the venture forth.

One must hope that common sense prevails and first they do seek out
the Environmental studies that will prove beyond all doubt
whether such a projects feasible, no long term damage done
to big fella sandy river that flows ‘neath our Queensland sun.

Chorus

Hey big fella sandy river you’re a mighty watercourse
from your Einasleigh, ancient uplands where you do begin your source.
Through the great savannah country to the mangroves by the sea
Hey big fella sandy river you are truly legendry.
