Djarra Dreaming

DJARRA DREAMING

I’m sitting by a cosy fire in old Djarra town
and lost within the glowing coals now that the sun went down.
The rum that I’d been drinking it had soothed my weary soul
and images of days of old were somehow in control.

The cry of cattle bellowing and stockwhips filled the air
while seasoned stockman cried demands and dust was everywhere.
The old black loco blowing steam and hooves hit loading ramps,
while other mobs were waiting too in nearby cattle camps.

Chorus

But then the cold night air crept in and chilled me to the bone
and once warm coals were ashes now and I sat there alone.
The images and sounds were gone though one could clearly glean
I’d been Djarra dreaming where that railhead once had been.

I’m sure I saw the Zigenbines, the Laffin brothers too
The Oldfields and so many more, who brought the big mobs through.
They say they railed more cattle here then Abilene’s hay day
But all that’s left is memories and what the records say.

The rail line it is long gone now, the Station site is bare,
but standing like a sentinel the water tank’s still there.
So when you’re travelling through this way you too might just aspire
to go Djarra dreaming by a cosy outback fire.

Chorus

But then the cold night air crept in and chilled me to the bone
and once warm coals were ashes now and I sat there alone.
The images and sounds were gone though one could clearly glean
I’d been Djarra dreaming where that railhead once had been.
