WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD?

Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side.

For most of my life I had thought this to be a meaningless little children's joke which really did not make much sense.

It was only recently that someone pointed out to me that 'to get to the other side' also referred to dying and going to an after-life, whatever that may be (heaven / hell / other)

So the double meaning was always that the chicken would cross the road to get to the other side of the road, or die trying.

I would be curious to know how many people were aware of the double meaning, or who like me dismissed it as a silly children's joke.

I had a dream (sorry Martin Luther ) that one day, all chickens could cross roads without having their motives questioned

Thinking along those lines do you think perhaps the chicken was suicidal?

Perhaps he wanted to commit suicide, but he was too chicken.

Maybe because "he" was a rooster....

Yeah, yeah, he had a lot to crow about....

Why did the rooster cross the road? Cause all the chickens were on the other side.
