I to worked for a company for 21 years called Denham Brothers for which Bros was an acceptable abbreviation on their letter head.

However that is a mile different from the current American slang Bro.

I suspect ,Bob , that the American slang came from the same source, people looking at shop signs.

Yeah could well be Nev but I don't know it just grates on me, Like how kids these days seem to think they have to do those hand signs every time they get a picture taken ?.

Or people who like to add Vegas to the end of towns names as in Brisvegas ect for Brisbane. Anyway maybe I'm just becoming a grumpy old bugger.
