Yarra River Darter

Post by Stephen Whiteside » Sun Dec 10, 2017 8:33 am

I was stunned to come across this glorious bird so close to my home in Northcote a few weeks ago. It took me a few moments to work out what it was. A cormorant? No, it was too large, and had a long neck. An egret? No, it was black. Then I realised - a darter! I have never seen on the Yarra before. Really a most splendid creature.

Great photos Stephen - I wonder what is driving them to that area ..Climate change, food shortages, habitat change ????

Thanks, Maureen. Yes, I wondered that, too. I haven't noticed one before, but perhaps they have been coming on and off for a while. I really don't know.
