As a kid I loved chitterlings and winkles - my Dad was a North country Lancastrian and that is what they ate up there..Chitterlings is the small intestine of the pig cleaned and plaited and put in a vinegar brine which makes the meat chewy with the texture of ham - I loved it.
Winkles are a small sea mollusc probably periwinkles - we used to get a twist of winkles (a paper cone) and a pin to pry them out of the shell . Salt and vinegar to the rescue again.

To this day I hate Oysters and the thought of chitterlings makes me heave - probably all in the head because I now know what it was I was eating.

I may not always succeed in making a difference, but I will go to my grave knowing I at least tried.

Now Maureen you Pom’s had your chittlings and periwinkles.

Now us bushies we had our beef oysters at the marking camps.

The odd carpet snake or two,

Witchetty grubs though I did not go much on them unless I was just a little bit tipsy and they were fried.

Honey ants, their not bad but only small

And goanna they were good if you suffered with constipation, and gee they cleaned you out well.

Sue.. a bit of bread fried in robust olive oil and loads of garlic is tasty. :) I love garlic bread, add a sip of Hunter Valley shiraz...perfect, what else would you need . :D

Know what you mean croc, but that's the cream they use for beesting cake. hmmm far from repulsive there.

I'll pass on those delicacies Maureen. :o :|

Glenny, we used to have some sort of creamy fishy emulsion, I forget what it was called. It seems that the early 20th century generation were obsessed with bowel movements as the source of all unhealthy conditions.

Tell the truth Bill, you lived on johnny cakes and lamb chops.

Me Mum was a product from the Ol' Dart -

Memories. Memories.

Also the strap if we didn't eat most of it.

The pain was brief. But the lessons remain.
