In 1845, Captain Charles Stuart and his team were stuck at Depot Glen. Northwest of present day Millparinka (NSW), he recorded the following temperatures on the 21st of February ...

In the shade - 57 degrees C (135 F)
In the Sun - 69 degrees C (157 F)

These two temperatures were the highest reliably recorded temperatures on Earth to that point in time, assuming Sturt took his usual care when taking them.
(This shade temperature was first eclipsed in 1922 in Libya by a reading of 58c)
