G'day Marty,

Perhaps I am ill informed but I thought the screening test was a simple physical and/or a blood test. There would not be adverse effects unless surgery and/or radiation had been undertaken. These days the treatment is becoming more refined and the side effects are far less than they were. Doctors also advise (after screening and other tests) whether they think the desease is agressive or not. I wonder if ostriches get Prostate cancer? I am aware that about 60% of men over 70 have low grade PC. and live their normal life span with it.

Go find yourself a dainty little Vietnamese doctor - according to my son they don't have gnarly fingers but do have daintier digits to do the dastardly deed with and they are easier on the eye as well. His words not mine

Just make sure that you shake the doctors hand and check out his fingers when you do Marty you will be ok ya big sissy.

given that for most of the men who will have a postive in these tests the tumor is benign and will not result in their death.

"most" Marty, but not all. Screening is about catching those that do have malignant tumours. Maybe it's what is done after the screening that is the issue, not the screening as such.....

What is the harm that screening does? that has never been stated in this post.

Maybe the College of General Practitioners should be educating their members on how to decide when surgery is necessary. Just to be cynical, one does wonder if necessary surgery means to some ; necessary to build up the bank balance.

Last February, a mate of mine died a horrible death from prostate cancer. I still have the blood screening each year.
