Alfie Langer

Post by Bob Pacey » Sun Oct 14, 2012 3:10 pm

Alfie Langer. To ( Coward of The County )

Everyone considered he would not make a football player
He was too small they used to say to tackle a big man
His mumma named him Allan but folks just called him Alfie
and something always told me they were reading Alfie wrong.

Was one evening in 2000 or 2000 and plus one
Queensland were in trouble the series almost gone
The Blues were really firing and Wayne Bennett almost panicked
Then he made a call to England "Alf we need a half who's strong."

He promised old Wayne that he would not let the team down
Would not walk away from trouble if he can
and they would not face defeat while a Queenslander as standing
He said Wayne I hope you have the faith to understand
sometimes ya gotta fight to the last man.

When Alfie took the field the Cockroaches were laughing
but he wiped that smile away as he tore those Blues apart
When he dived in under neath the post He sealed another famous series
and then the Little General ripped out the Blues teams heart.

Then he Said.

I promised you Wayne that I would not let Queensland down
That the trophy from our hands would not be torn.
I did it for my mates and the loyal Queensland public
So Wayne it's now I hope you understand
this passion it is with you when you're born.

Bob Pacey.
The purpose in life is to have fun.

Young Alfie is an Ipswich lad so no more need be said
he might be small of stature but knows how to use his head.
When tackling go for the knees – even the mighty fall
you don’t need to be six foot mate – we breed ‘em smart and small.
The Allan Langer Medal, which is the Ipswich Jets' player of the year award was named in his honour. Alfie's Bar at the Broncos Leagues Club is also named after him.

The youngest of Queensland Rail worker, Harry Langer's four sons, Allan Langer was born and raised in Ipswich, Queensland.

He grew up playing football at Ipswich's Northern Suburbs Tigers alongside brothers and future Brisbane Broncos (as well as Queensland Maroons and Australian Kangaroos) team mates Kevin and Kerrod Walters.

This combination of players would become known famously as "The Ipswich Connection". He was selected as an Australian schoolboy representative in 1982.
