Another interesting word

Post by Neville Briggs » Thu Sep 06, 2012 2:37 pm

I discovered another interesting word to-day.

Fanfaronade... it means arrogant talk, brag.

This weekend is the local government elections in NSW, I thought I would approach a mayoral candidate and with a big smile shake his hand and encouragingly say " I have been so impressed by your ability to present the most outstanding fanfaronade of this election campaign'. I think he will be well pleased.

Fanfaronade... it has a lovely ring to it. I assume someone who can fanfaronade can also filibuster.

It does have a lovely ring to it - all frothy and bubbly - like a cross between Fanta and Lemonade. No doubt Polly will be well pleased

My old dad used to say " If you have to look up the meaning or spelling of a word , don't use it "

Many is the time I've sat down to write reports or memos and it has stood me in good stead.

I think that your Dad was partly right Bob. Short words are probably punchier and better for bush poetry.
But then if we are to write poetry, shouldn't we be uncurable philologists,( word lovers ), I would argue that it's a good practice for poetry writers to trawl through the dictionary looking for words to expand their vocabulary. You don't have to use them, just let them build up your thinking processes.
I firmly believe that an expanded vocabulary creates an expanded ability to think about things. And I've got a long way to go :)

Dave, you could quite legitimately fanfaronade on your great grandfather status :)

Maureen : That's good Maureen. Poets are sensitive to the music of language aren't they ?.

I'm sure you're right Robyn......... Filibuster. ; Question Time in Parliament. ;)

G'day everyone,

I think it is good to know the meaning of big words. That way I can answer a question in the words I choose and not sound like a hick from the hills. It is when I talk about something of which I know nothing that I prove I am a fool. Having said that, I'll retire to my corner. I'm watching even if not saying much these days.

Nothing wrong with being a HICK Zondrae, pride comes before a fall.

Oh Nev never said anything about short words just the use of words that you don't understand.

This is a quote Stephen King gave me permission to use in my book......"If a reader needs a Thesaurus to understand the meaning of what you are trying to put across; you have lost them"
