Corned Beef ?

As a mere male, I have often dwelt upon things domestic, particularly in my younger days.

The subject heading intrigued me - Why 'Corned' ?

Fortunately I found an old copy of
ABC Radio's Q&A Collection, volume two
Published 1984.

Does anyone else have an answer ? ? ?
Jim.

Google told me on the grapevine
Origin of the Word "Corn"

The term Corn is modified from an Old Germanic (P.Gmc) Word
Kurnam which meant small seed of anything. Since a kernel of rock
salt look like a wheat or oat kernel size it became known as a corn of salt.
Even the word Kernel comes from this word Kurnam. or Kurnilo which meant
the root of the seed...

The Mention of “Corned Beef”
goes back to an English Book by Richard Burton in 1621, Anatomy of Melancholy...Beef ..corned young of an ox ..."
I had no idea that Richard Burton was that old :o  - he must have been well and truly corned to last as long as he did.

It looks to me like someone ( both of them) are rather quick at using google.

What did we do before google? Oh I remember, we would look it up in an encyclopedia. Now I see why the Britanica is going out of 'print'.

I think there would be more than one answer to the question but I don't have an alternative to offer only that 'Corning' referred to the method of preserving, which is a wet preparation rather than a dry process. They couldn't call is 'salted' as this is one of the terms used for the dried product. I do like home cooked corn beef with white sauce and I make it quite often.

good on you Marty.

Someone has to keep up with technology. Also I wasn't saying it was either bad or good, only quick.

How cold is it round your way? I can hardly wait for November and a little more sunshine.
