Looks like a Black Mamba, longest snake in Africa (up to 15 ft). Incredibly fast but mostly use their speed to escape.
Not as venomous as our Coastal Browns ...

it is a black headed python approx 18 to 19 ft long not agressive in fact easy to handle photo taken half way between Tweed heads and Murwillumbar by the Tweed river near the island that's the island in the background he was very agro when we first saw him but after he settled down Doug put him in his lock up canopy ute and took him to the Currumbin zoo that was in 1971

Well I'll be buggered ... it could well be, just seems a bit long ...

Who took the picture Bill??

BLACK-HEADED PYTHON (ASPIDITES MELANOCEPHALUS)
Description
This relatively thick-set python has a small head indistinct from the neck. It is light to dark brown dorsally, often lighter on the sides with numerous darker brown, reddish brown, or blackish crossbands which are usually narrower than the lighter interspaces. The head, neck and throat are a shiny jet black. Ventrally the colour is cream to yellow, occasionally with darker blotches.

The scalation is smooth with 50-65 mid body rows, 315-355 ventrals, single anal and 60-75 mainly single subeaudals. The posterior subcaudals tend to be divided, often irregularly. This snake averages 1.5 metres in length although specimens of up to nearly double this length have been recorded.

Habits
This species is found throughout the northern third of mainland Australia

I received it as an email Bob but I probably don't have it still - cause I don't like snakes! I had a feeling it was Australian though.

Just don't reckon it's a black headed python ... the longest is under 9 ft and the Tweed is too far South of their habitat ...

Were you there when that pic was taken, and did you know the bloke who took that photo Bill??

my mind may be a little rusty being 30 years ago but that was the breed I was told and when Doug calmed him down he was friendly my wife had him draped on her shoulders for a while and my two boys patted him before Doug took him away with him.
