Zondrae beat me to the punch. "Mate." I can't stand that word at all. To my ear, it has been completely ruined since old Henry's day. It now sounds harsh and exclusive. It excludes women. It excludes all cultures other than white Anglo-Saxons. Much of the time it's used ironically and aggressively. People who quite clearly don't like each other at all still refer to each other as 'mates'.

Give me 'buddy' any day. I know it's American, but at least it denotes genuine affection. Anything but 'mate'!

Hi Stephen from the way you write of (buddy) in its American ism way to me does not smack of friend ship Eg like a car driver yelling out to a pedestrian hey buddy get out of the bbbbb road.

Where at mate and it is not gender spercific as you imply it is just what it means Eg soul mate, your old mate, or friend, it may just be a referral word used to denote somebody it is used in the country and it is not a word used in cultured circles but at least it is AUSTRALIAN

I called a bloke mate back in the eighties and he rounded on me saying "I'm not your mate!" I said "No. Not anybodies really." He became a polly at which he was a spectacular failure. When he really needed mates he didn't have any.

The moral of the story is: A bloke or a sheila needs his or her mates.
