No Bob...some write for both, others write for one or the other. However, I had a friend, a very good poet, who said poets write because they have to, which although a little more profound, is still not completely correct either.

Maybe it's more accurate to say they feel a "need" to write.
I don't write for either ego or money. I write because I like to write and I enjoy the process.

A poem has a will of its own and wants to get into us and grow, like a germ.

That's a good one Heather, every would-be poet here should learn what that means

See that at least twice a week at the local tip H.
I'd rather see the glint in a persons eyes because the eyes hold the key to their soul.

A poet is somebody who feels and who expresses their feelings through words.
This may sound easy, it isn't.
A lot of people think or believe or know they feel; but that's thinking or believing or knowing, not feeling.
And poetry is feeling; not knowing or believing or thinking.
Almost anybody can learn to think or believe or know, but not a single human being can be taught to feel.
Why ? Because whenever you think or you believe or you know, you're a lot of people;
but the moment you feel, you're nobody but yourself.
e e cummings
