Got them birds at work. All they seem to do is stand around staring into the windows still unsure of why.
Make the eeriest damn sounds too when they call out at night. I walk around buildings at night and here them things calling out sends a shiver up your spine if its dead quiet.

So Cryptic . . . you're either a practising burglar or some sort of security bloke? Or maybe you just have a fetish for buildings in the dark :?

You're right though - we get'em here (the curlews, not the buildings) and anyone staying here who hasn't heard them is fair dinkum freaked out by'em.

Aahh, curlews, gotta luv 'em, masters of disguise indeed.

There are two adults and two chicks in this picture. True, there are four of 'em, I promise.

Frogmouths are pretty good at disguise too. I have a picture of a family of them somewhere as well, they are even better hidden than this curlew family. I might see if I can find it but in the meantime - find the curlews. :D

Bob, I came across a great bush poem that mentions curlews.
Here's a bit of it..

Then took the cattle to the forest camps
With vacant terror and the hustled sheep
Stood dumb against the hurdles, even like
A fallen patch of shadowed snow;
And ever through the curlew's call afar
The storm grew on, ......

I can see them too,

I almost skitled a pair among the plants of a median strip in the heart of Cairns about two years. The first day I saw one. I don't know who was more startled him or me. The next day I went looking for him or it could be her, and found the pair with one chick. I was surprised they were so tall. But they looked like they would weigh very light. Don't know why I thought this. Then not long after I met a Cassowary in a car park at Mission Beach.
