'The boy turns the handle.'

This is the transitive use of the verb 'turns', as there is a transition in the turning from the boy to the handle.

'The boy turns'.

This is the intransitive use of the verb, as there is no transition in turning from the boy.

Similarly, 'morning has broken' is the intransitive use of the verb 'broken'. 'Morning has broken the tea-cup' would be the transitive use of 'broken' since there would have been a transition from morning to the tea-cup - not that it would make any sense. Hence the joke - not a very good one, of course, but still a joke...I guess.

Mathematically, the transitive property follows, if a = b and b = c, then a = c ... :D

But my gramma's in the kitchen baking lamingtons ...

Grammas baking lamingtons - transitive.

The lamingtons are baking - intransitive.

Mathematicians make good bush poets - something about the rhyme and metre.

Makes me head spin but I get it. Thanks Stephen.

Makes me head spin-- transitive

Makes me head--intransitive

TTFN Not so 8-)

PS I think "Morning has Broken" was in the hymn book when we went to sunday school
an' that was a long time before cat Stephens.
