Yes Heather, unfortunately he was serious. He was a student pilot, no instrument rating, and got caught in a mass of cloud. Back at the flying school they were clustered around the radio, thinking we would never make it. But we climbed above the cloud... luckily it topped out at 10,000ft and wasn't one of the giants that would've seen us lose consciousness before we found the top.
There was a lot of shouting and gesticulating between the two in the front seats, in Spanish so I didn't get all the words, but there was no mistaking the meaning!

Hi Bob and Ross, it wasn't the flying that worried me, it was the prospect of its sudden cessation that bothered me...

Yes I'd worked that out Ross, but had in mind the quote from Douglas Adams in one of his excellent Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy books... can't remember which one, something about the trick to flying being to avoid the ground... of course he said it in much more interesting language that I've used!

I am supposed to be out in the desert fixing stuff at the moment, we took off at 7.00am and got just past the space base....about fifteen minutes from the airport, when the pilot said, "Sorry to annoy you, but we have to go back, the alternator has shi....stopped working, and we are running out of battery power." Consequently I am home in the office!
